Charm of Finches Return with new single ‘Middle Of Your Mess’

Charm of Finches return with the second single from their upcoming fourth full length album ‘Marlinchen in the Snow’ and this time they do so with the backing of a major label.

Behind the tongue in cheek music video (which leans into some light familial poisoning) there is a heartfelt sentiment of inadequacy, comparison and the desire to fit in. ‘Middle of your Mess’ describes the juxtaposition between the pressure to conform and the urgency not to betray oneself and that tension coalesces into one of the sweetest sounding murder ballads I guarantee you’ll ever find.

It’s the bridge that gives the game away here, a dream-like passage that toils around visions of violence before, as if it would have slipped under all our noses, the song jauntily galivants back into those entwining and sister-ly sweet harmonies that form the backbone of any Finches song.

The resulting dissonance is one of surface level whimsy, satisfying and bright, circa 60’s folk-rock nostalgia and a subtly depraved desire to take drastic action against the confines of someone else.

If you ever felt like First Aid Kit would have benefitted from some ‘Honeybear-era’ Father John Misty production, or that Nick Cave’s twisted tales might have been more palettable in the palms of two talented sisters, then it’s shaping up that Marlinchen might be for you.

Recorded across a Canadian winter there is almost no semblance of the colder climate on this Summer-ready cut, proof, if nothing else, that the Finches take the Australian sunshine with them wherever they go.

‘Marlinchen in the Snow’ will be released via Universal Music Australia on the 19th of April.
