Sitting on my flight back to London this evening going through my list of tunes I’ve been sent and tunes I’d saved – I come across this chilled to the max little gem from the UK’s critically acclaimed Jazz Pianist Neil Cowley. There is nothing complicated and brash to be heard here, a simple slow-rolling electronic drum pattern, snippets of atmospheric strings and clean piano chords providing the melodic direction.
This is a tune which reminds me of Icelandic duo ‘Kiasmos‘ in its mellow electro vibe. As soon as the imposing drum loop began to pump away on first listen I was intrigued, by the time the piano arrived, I was in a semi-trancelike state. This is a lovely minimalist shoe-gazer from Cowley, it’s made it all the way into my 2019 playlist for sure. Melancholy!
Listen to his latest EP ‘Grains & Motes’ which is a collaboration with Ben Lukas Boysen, if you are in a vegging out mood.
Check him live in London on May 2nd @ Oslo Hackney.
