We stop off somewhere near Hull, UK, for the fabulous folk-y textures of Alice Clayton. Her debut EP ‘Now Is Not Your Time To Speak’, features four well polished introductory tracks. Magpie fell onto my lap during the week and it is my stand-out track so far. It is chirpy, vibrant and full of charm.
Magpie opens with subtle strings accompanying Clayton’s impressive vocals. As the track progresses we are treated to a really catchy chorus. I have been humming it around London today so it’s fair to say, Clayton has struck something gold here.
The EP on the whole is a pretty decent opening offering from Clayton. Her vocals are really on point throughout. The baritone uke filled ‘Pinocchio Had A Point‘ is a really charming little piece. ‘Imposter‘ is a bit darker in tone lyrically with lines like ‘I’m average at best’ and the repeated murmuring of the lyric, ‘the imposter in me is more than I ever will be’, littering this emotive track. The heavy crescendo towards the end is certainly impactful.
