KaiL Baxley // Beneath The Bones

kail baxley

My Sunday morning pick comes from LA based songwriter KaiL Baxley. This is simply stunning, a tune straight out of an epic movie soundtrack from the future. This song has just surfaced in the last few hours and I must have listened about thirty times already. This is probably the best Sunday morning track of the year, or, ever. Ah we love this one.

This is a deep little number on the whole. Pensive chords, eerie humming and emotive lyrics. As soon as Baxley’s vocals come in, you gotta just sit back, sip on your cup of tea and nod your head in appreciation. There is something very ‘Django Unchained’ about this one.

Baxley himself has one of the best bio’s I’ve seen thus far too. Apparently, his father was an outlaw, his mother was incarcerated during his childhood and the legendary James Brown taught him how to dance. As he got older his prosperous boxing career was cut short by a couple of gunshots and brushes with the law. This saw him live in an RV for a few years. Music was the only consistent thing in Baxley’s life during these turbulent years. His first record ‘Heat Stroke/ The Wind and The War‘ was nominated for album of the year at NPR. It is blatently apparent that Baxley’s tough upbringing and unique lifestyle has shaped his songwriting to great effect.

The magic of KaiL’s music continues to spread via word of mouth and his captivating live performances. We all have been dealt a bad hand in life at some point or another, Kail Baxley chooses to turn those hands into beautiful music.
