Three years ago, I ventured to Brick Lane for an evening of drinks with my housemate Dee. It was my first time in this hip and exciting part of town and we soaked up the sun, graffiti and skateboarding in the park before making our way to the pub for drinks later on. We sat outside the liveliest bar we could find and tucked into a couple of tasty pints, followed by a couple more. Dee is a fantastic chatter and naturally, we got chatting to the punters in and around us. The night was picking up momentum nicely and Dee was doing his upmost to bring everyone sat outside this bar together.
After a while, our table grew from just the two of us to around five or six – conversation was flowing. One of the new additions who joined our table that night was Theo Varda. He was sitting close-by and pulled up a stool, his passion for music was instantly appealing to me. An encyclopaedia for sound, Varda seemed to know everything there is to know about electronic music and seemed to know his way around the production end too. We clicked musically and as the night came to a close with Dee heading off one direction with a girl he had just met, I headed back to Theo’s flat nearby.
We sat in his flat all night listening to music; both of us equally as music obsessed as the other. It was a night I cherished greatly as we spun tracks from Maceo Plex all the way down to Lane 8. Varda then showed me a couple of his own constructions – the man has unbridled, untapped talent! I walked home early the next morning knowing that I had just met a chap as excited about music as myself and that was a cool feeling. We met a few times after before he moved down to Margate.
Yesterday Theo released one of his finest productions to date (alongside ‘Midnight Truffler’) and it’s called NEVA. If you are into breakbeat, he is your man. A true creative and a character I’m glad I crossed paths with.
